Preparedness - A Well Attended Meeting on June 24th

The Meeting for preparedness was well attended and we received some good information. Thanks go out to Dr. Harvey and to Carol Miller for their helpful presentations. Please see the list below (read more)  of what you need to be prepared. Please comment on anything else you may find is needed and not listed.


Recommended Supplies to Include in a Basic Kit

Water, one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation store enough for at least 3 - 7 days

Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food

Battery-powered radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries for both – better - Crank radio

 Flashlight and extra batteries

Whistle to signal for help

Moist wipes

garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

Dust mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air

Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place

Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

Can opener for food (if kit contains canned goods) Non electric

1 box Aluminum Foil

1 roll Toilet paper

1  roll Paper towels




Personal Items



It is possible that the power will be out and you will not have air conditioning

·         One complete change of  suitable seasonal clothing and shoes per person, including: Long pants, long sleeve shirt, Sturdy shoes and socks, A jacket or rain gear

·         A sleeping bag or blanket for each person

·         Toiletries – i.e.Toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, brush, soap

·         puzzles, books, board games, cards

·         hearing aid batteries and eyewear

·         Glucose test strips and monitors for diabetics

·         First aid kit:  should include: pairs of sterile gloves, soap, antibiotic wipes, bandages, stretch gauze and roll tape, thermometer, antacid, laxative, petroleum jelly, eye wash, aspirin, or non aspirin pain relievers, anti-diarrhea meds, scissors, tweezers, hydrogen peroxide

·         Emergency reference materials such as a first aid book and your Medications at hand to pack quickly (don't let your meds run low)
 
 

Here are some other items to consider adding to your supply kit. Some of these items, especially those marked with a * handle with care.


·         Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils

·         Cash or traveler's checks, change

·         Paper towel

·         Fire Extinguisher

·         Tent

·         Compass/and or map

·         Matches in a waterproof container*

·         Signal flare*

·         Paper/pencil

·         Disinfectant* Household chlorine bleach* - You can use bleach as a disinfectant (diluted nine parts water to one part bleach), or in an emergency you can also use it to treat water. Use 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

·         Medicine dropper

·         Important Family Documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container, medical records keep in ziplock plastic bags or waterproof container

·         Needle and thread

·         Tape
 

Food Supplies –

 enough for 2 people for about 2 weeks




WATER  - 2 people

3 days 6 gal.

1 week – 14 gal

1 Gal per day for your pet too.

The reason we use canned food because of the water content
1 can Pork & Beans
1 cans white potatoes
2 cans Corn
2 cans Green beans
2 cans of assorted beans i.e. black, red, pinto
1 cans Condensed Soup
3 4 prepared meals in a can i.e. spaghetti
3 cans Tuna fish
1 can Chili (I buy Amy’s Brand- its organic and tasty)
1 can Pears
1 can Fruit cocktail
1 can Pineapple
1 can Peaches
1 can Applesauce
1 cans Evaporated Milk
Couple of boxes of soy milk
 

DRY FOOD

1 box Crackers

2 Lb Rice

2 Boxes Granola Bars

1 box Instant Oatmeal

1 can pre-sweetened beverage mix i.e. ice tea

2 boxes Macaroni & Cheese

1 box Raisins or dried fruits

1 jar Instant Coffee

1 box Tea

1 box Sugar

1 box Powered Milk

1 jar Creamer

1 can Applesauce

2 cans Evaporated Milk

Dehydrated food is also good if you make sure you have enough water.
